How to Choose a Great Domain Name for Your Site

Laptop Keyboard and Notepad

You need to choose a domain name for your new website. Here are some tips to select a great name:

  • Make it easy to remember, easy to spell, and easy to type.
  • Be more specific rather than more generic (e.g., thespicytomato.com).
  • Keep it short and simple.
  • Use a keyword that answers what people are searching for and what you offer (e.g., foodtruckaccessories.com).
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers (Is that 2, two, too, or to?)
  • How closely do you want your website to be connected to your name? Think about what you want your brand identity to be.
  • If appropriate, include your geographic area (e.g., northernkentuckyvacationrentals.com).
  • Verify the name is not protected by copyright or trademark, and that it is not currently in use. You will also want to try variations on the name to see what existing sites would compete for traffic.
  • Choose a suitable top-level domain (TLD) extension, like.com, .org, .net, .tech, .site, and lots of others.
  • Consider registering misspellings and other variations on your primary domain (e.g., scottchadwick.com points to my primary domain).

Note: If you want to register multiple domain names or extensions for a single website, just forward the other domains to your primary domain.
